When I retired this year, I wanted to mark the occasion
with a very special present to myself. ACTIF gave me exactly what I
wanted - a memorable experience with very memorable people.
Although the program was cancelled because of the September 11th
consequences, Matilda Lipscomb and Kevin Lightner could not have given
me a warmer welcome, and a chance to become acquainted with their
charming friends in Montpellier. Montpellier, incidentally, is very much
an overlooked treasure, surrounded by three-star sites to the north and
south -- most of them an easy day trip.
Even with no formal program, I had a very rich and full 2 months.
Since my level of French is intermediate, I attended the Institut
Linguistique du Peyrou, and made excellent progress, if I do say so
myself.
Kevin, bless him, facilitated day trips - my favorite was the
astounding Pond du Gard, a 2000-year-old marvel of Roman engineering.
This aqueduct, and the life at the time of its construction, is
explained by a brilliant multi media show, the best I've ever seen, and
I was in that business!
My accommodations at the Citadines were very comfortable. When my
sister visited for 2 weeks, no problem, the living room has a sofa
bed.
Quality shopping is close at hand with everything from gorgeous
produce, cheeses and breads to the chic Galleries Lafayette.
I've given Matilda and Kevin my telephone number and e-mail address.
Feel free to call or e-mail for any further info or impressions -- I'm
definitely starting a fan club!
