What’s New? October 1997

Well, here we are again. The staff at the library is back, rested and full of energy after a summer of travel, wonderful time spent with family and just plain fun! We hope your summer was just as great! We’re now busy processing and cataloging the mountain of books that just came in! Students in the CAPES-AGREGATION program will be happy to note that the bound dossiers of articles have arrived (in record time) and are available at the circulation desk. We have also received hundreds of fiction and non-fiction titles so please stop by and take a look. There’s something new for everyone. Enjoy!

The conversation groups started meeting in mid-September and they are very popular. If you haven’t been to one lately, come check it out. Faithful participants are thrilled to have the opportunity to practice speaking and help one another. A reminder: half of the session is in English and half in French so everyone benefits. The schedule remains the same: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. to 6:30. This is a free service for Library members.

Open House and Book Sale

November 15, 1997 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The semi-annual Open House and Book Sale is just around the corner! This year’s winter sale is scheduled a bit earlier than usual. We hope that this timing will enable a large number of people to take advantage of the special 20 % Library card discount offered on that day.

There will be hundreds of books in English, French (and other languages) for sale at unbeatable prices. If you have books to donate to the sale, please try to bring them in to the Library by the end of October so they can be sorted and labeled.

As usual, there will be members of the American Women’s Group on hand to serve their delicious Coffee, cookies and cake! Yum!

Christmas Concert

The Friends of the American Library Association is pleased to announce that it will sponsor the Christmas concert of the Madrigalistes de Montpellier

The program of Anglo-Saxon Christmas Music will be held on Sunday December 21, 1997 at 5:30 p.m. at the Eglise Saint Mathieu.

A message from the President

--Claude Clerc

Antigone des Associations

Friends of the American Library present at the Fair.

The "Antigone des Associations" fair was a great success. Our stand attracted hundreds of interested (and interesting) people. Many thanks go out to Friends who spent the day with us and distributed more than three hundred Library brochures. Special thanks to Claude Chappe, Marshall Shrago, Denise Signol, Tess Ogolah and Brigitte Carenne.

More thanks

As always, our profound thanks to Mr. Roy Lightner, Mrs. Frances Castan and Mr. Roger Brown for their very generous contributions to the Friends of the American Library.

And speaking of members, please be sure to fill our and return to us the "pink slip" for this year. It’s your continuing loyalty to our Library which enables it to function and grow. We depend on our good Friends for so much!

Fun fact: Did you know that finding a "pink slip" in your pay envelope in the United States means "YOU’RE FIRED!"?

Our "pink slip" means just the opposite. We send you one every year to say "We need you...We can’t do without you !"

What have you read lately ?

Express yourself !

Did you know that the American Library has a site on the World Wide Web (internet)? * Computer nut Kevin has designed and maintains the site. One of the more interesting pages on the site consists of book recommendations by Library staff and members. Have you read a book lately that you just couldn’t put down? Would you like to share it with the rest of us? If so, contact Kevin at the Library and he’ll add it to the page. If you feel like writing a short review go right ahead. We may post it on the Web.... The whole world is waiting!!
