JANUARY 1999

What’s New?

The Holiday season has come and gone but we are still in a festive mood here at the Library.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy and productive new year!

Whether or not this year marks the end of the millenium is a question that is still open to debate. Nevertheless, here’s a hearty welcome to the last year of the 1900s.

New years, decades, centuries and other landmark dates are always cause for reflection on past accomplishments and plans for the future. The American Library of Montpellier is now embarking on its 45th year of service to our community.

The Library’s collection of books and other materials has continued to grow, circulation is up and membership is holding steady. All of this is largely due to YOUR generosity and enthusiasm. Thank you! We could never have done it without our Friends!

Libraries all over the world are now embracing new research tools and technologies. 1998 was the year that the Internet came to our Library and we have added "cybrarian" to our job descriptions. Even formerly "techno-skeptical" Françoise has become remarkably computer savvy and is thrilled to be able to communicate instantly by email and to find book references and other information on the Net. Of course, none of this means that we have been neglecting our book collection. Au contraire! We know that nobody wants to curl up in bed with a computer!

Therefore, we are continuing to add hundreds of new books every year and are keeping our periodicals collection healthy and up-to-date.

Come and see for yourself how your library is growing and improving. After all, YOU made it all possible.

–Kevin Lightner

Open House and Book Sale

Another Great Success!

December’s Open House and Book Sale was another great success! Hundreds of people visited the Library on December 5th and we netted over eleven thousand francs that will go towards several new projects. In addition about fifty people took advantage of the special Library membership discount that was offered on that day.

Once again we would like to thank the loyal sponsors of our annual raffle sale. AIR LITTORAL was kind enough to donate yet another free trip for two to Rome for our Grand Prize. Sponsors included the BOOKSHOP, SOS PIZZA, Annie Coiffure and McDonald’s. Thanks also to members of the American Women's Group who served their delicious homemade goodies!

ASSEMBLEE GENERALE

The Annual Meeting (Assemblée Générale) of the Friends of the American Library will take place on Monday, February 8 at 12 noon at the Library.

All members of our Association are cordially invited to attend this meeting. We welcome this opportunity each year to get together and to discuss your suggestions concerning the Library and its services. If you can not attend, please send in the enclosed proxy form.

A Slide Show and talk by Rose Schott

Tuesday, 16 February at 3:00 p.m.

WORD for WORD

The San Francisco-based theater troupe, Word for Word will be back in Montpellier on March 20, 1999! at the Maison Pour Tous Marie Curie in Celleneuve. The performance will be at 5 PM. Word for Word stages literary works, using the author's texts verbatim (including "he says" and "she says") thereby preserving the author's original intent.

This year's story is the excellent "Rose-Johnny" by Barbara Kingsolver. The Library has a copy of the story for those of you who would like to read it before the performance. This program is made possible by a grant from the Florence Gould Foundation.

NOTE: We are looking for members who would like to host one or more of the actors. If you are interested, please contact Kevin at the Library or Annie Gravier.

See the Library's web site for more information about Word for Word and a review of last year's performance.
