JANUARY 2000

What's New?

Word for Word to perform in March

Word for Word will be back in town in March  with their production of Alice Munro's "Friend of my Youth".

The performance is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on March 18th at the Maison Pour Tous in Celleneuve.

Word for Word stages literary works, using the author's texts verbatim (including "he says" and "she says"). This program is made possible by a grant from the Florence Gould Foundation and the support of Air France.

See the following links for information about Word For Word and reviews of past performances.

LIBRARY MOVE

The Library will be closing February 19th to prepare for its move to the Bibliothèque Interuniversitaire on the "Richter Campus". Needless to say that this is a big project that will require a lot of time to complete. The new library will be located on the first floor of the building on the side facing the river. It is scheduled to re-open on May 3rd.

The Richter campus is located on the Lez River near the Conseil Régional building. Bus number 2 stops  in front of the library building and the Tramway will stop there also when it is completed in June.

GOODBYE FROM KEVIN

In February the American Library will move into the Bibliothèque inter-universitaire. Due to budget constraints, I will no longer be a member of the American Library's Staff.

I have enjoyed my seventeen years of service to our community and I am especially proud of our development over the years (We have doubled in size since my arrival). I am also happy to have been able to expand the Library’s opening hours so members can visit after working hours. I have derived immense satisfaction from my efforts to help produce concerts and plays that generated publicity for the library and brought us new members. I have also enjoyed setting up the American Library Public Access Computer system that brought our library into the Information/Internet Age. I hope to be able to maintain this web site as long as possible; but between hosting the site as I have at my own expense, and paying the rent... I'm afraid my landlady has the upper hand.

So, it is with a heavy heart that I bid you all “adieu”. I wish you all the best. Please visit the new American Library in “Richter” as often as you can. Françoise will still be there to welcome you and to help you find whatever you need.

-Kevin Lightner

THEME OF THE MONTH

Our "Theme of the month" for January is "Looking back at Tomorrow". Now that the year 2000 is actually here, I thought it would be amusing to display books, magazine articles, cartoons and advertisements featuring predictions of the future. I've selected materials from the forties, the fifties and the sixties containing "visions of the future from the past".            -KL
